The Opportunity:

CoolIT Systems, Inc. is looking for a high performing Team Lead, Thermal Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role to join our Calgary team. The primary responsibility of this role is to work with the Engineering and Program management teams to develop and design custom products for our ODM customers using Solidworks, other analysis tools, and Engineering best practices to solve problems along the way.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in product development for next generation data center and desktop cooling products, particularly Passive Coldplate Loops and Manifolds 
  • Act as Mechanical Project Captain for development activities being undertaken by managing the needs of project stakeholders 
  • Mentor other Engineers and EITs on mechanical design principals 
  • Conduct and partake in client/technology partner interactions to determine requirements and present these at project kick-off 
  • Engage in and lead meetings and presentations with stakeholders 
  • Understand and conduct system level design for pumping & cooling systems 
  • Prepare early design concepts and contribute to product architecture including system block diagrams 
  • CAD duties: authoring and reviewing 2D drawings and 3D models, primarily in a supervisory role 
  • Develop and review plans to manufacture, test, and verify the operation of new components, systems, and overall products 
  • Thoroughly document all aspects of the design and testing, including entering design specification data into our Solidworks PDM and Arena PLM databases 
  • Conduct or support CFD, Structural FEA, and thermal models 
  • Conduct and participate in lab testing and verification, sometimes in a supervisory role 
  • Collaborate with the Test Engineering team to ensure that Regulatory and Environmental compliance standards are met 
  • Verify and implement the correct use of design and drafting standards 
  • Support the submission of ECN and ECR documentation 
  • Support yearly budgeting and performance review activities 
  • Perform other duties as necessary to support the team 
  • Follow CoolIT ISO 9001:2015 quality procedures 

Required Skills

  • Strong desire to work in a fast-paced technology company focused on increasing speed-to-market & production efficiency and reducing finished product cost 
  • Strong focus on product quality 
  • Deep understanding of the mechanics of water pumps, fans, and various types of heat exchangers 
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) concepts 
  • Experience with and understanding of thermal analysis and CFD 
  • Experience with and understanding of structural FEA 
  • Strong understanding of the roles and different aspects of the engineering design and product development process (PDP) 
  • Experience with Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (dFMEA) 
  • Proficient in CAD tools, specifically Solidworks 
  • Knowledge & understanding of material science and structural design 
  • Knowledge of the mechanics of springs, screws, and other retention hardware 
  • Experience with static and dynamic analysis & testing (i.e. shock & vibration, thermal testing, pressure testing) 
  • Understanding in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems 
  • Strong critical thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs 
  • Valid and unrestricted driving license 
  • Valid and unrestricted passport 
  • Understanding of Electronics  
  • Experience and training with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing 
  • Experience using Solidworks PDM 
  • Experience using Arena PLM 
  • High attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with clients in meetings and respond well to questions 
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and utilize planning & time management skills to adhere to strict deadlines 
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude with ability for innovating thinking 
  • Base knowledge of cooling strategies used in the data center industry  
  • Experience working in the data center industry 
  • Experience working with processor heatsinks of different varieties, including Direct Liquid Cooling
