A question on fan speed 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi all ...

I'd like to say what a great product. I needed to extend the sysfan cable as my mobo only has one and its situated at the bottom of the board. I also used my own ocz freeze thermal paste. Its cooling a amd II x6 core 1090T running on a MSI 890GXM-G65 with 8 gig of ram and coretemp is reporting the temp at 23C as i write this which is around 10C lower than the stock fan. This is a new build with the cooler added 2 days after as i had to wait for delivery from a different supplier. It is also extremely quiet.

That said i just i want to check a couple of things. I installed it in a push/pull config using my existing CM scout rear fan on the front of the radiator. I connected it as described in the manual and now the questions ...

Firstly i noticed the eco fan not spinning? Is this because the other fan is running from a molex and keeping it cool enough that its not needed or should it turn anyway even if slowly?

Secondly is coretemp an adequate program to monitor it or is there another program i should try?

Thanks for any answers.

ChAoS,
Thank you for the kind comments about our CoolIT ECO ALC.

To answer your questions about fan speeds.

I am assuming that you have the fan connected to the CPU header. The fan speed is controlled by the BIOS CPU regulation. I am hoping that you have the BIOS CPU fan control ENABLED.
At idle the fan should run around the 800 RPM range.
At the processor up the BIOS makes the decision to ramp up the fan speed to a maximum of 1800 RPM.

By adding a "push" fan, depending on the speed and air flow you could possible "drive the ECO ALC fan, since it is connected to run 100% all the time. Usually exhaust case fans run around the 2200 to 2500 RPM ranges.

Concerning the best monitoring software. I will let other answer that, as I am curious as the "favourite " as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'm almost too embarrased to reply again myself. lol

I opened up the case and found i hadn't pushed the 4 pin fan connector properly on to the cpu fan header. I suppose i would have noticed this sooner if the other fan wasn't keeping things cool.

Once fully connected it seemed to be spinning at 100% for no apparent reason so it was bios time. My mobo has a thing called "CPU SMART FAN TARGET" which was disabled. I set it to 50C and set the minimum fan speed to 12.5%. This means the eco fan now spins at around 865 rpm untill the cpu gets over 50C then it should kick in to lower the temp. This hasn't happen yet as the cpu is cooler but i will test it later by putting the cpu under load.

Anyway im back to everything working how it should and still a quiet pc.

Yup, looks like everything is working great now. Its always the stupid little things we miss.

As far as monitoring software, I prefer Speedfan for temps.
